Maundy Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Writing & Literature from the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, Vermont and has studied writing and literature with Claire Keegan in Ireland, and Joyce Maynard in Guatemala. She has worked as an internationally acclaimed portrait photographer. She has exhibited her work throughout the U.S. and abroad, and her photos have been published in magazines and on billboards. She is a member of Women’s Caucus for Art. She holds a trademark on the phrase, “People are beautiful,” which is her core belief as a writer and an artist. She holds a second-degree black belt in Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate, and administered for several years in an academy and dojo in Lebanon, New Hampshire. She has trained to fly planes. She served for more than seven years as CEO for a company providing in-home care for the elderly with more than sixty employees. She has volunteered for several foundations, including Make-a-Wish, Friends of the Arts, For the Love of Dog, and the Fresh Air Fund. She lives with her family in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA and is currently working on a book-length memoir, and a novel.
Artist Statement
Henry David Thoreau wrote: “Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?”
My work is about celebrating the magic of the human experience. I am interested in the connections between the character and reader. Through my work, I ask the reader for empathy toward others.
The invitation to look closer is key to a successful story. A closer look creates empathy, and empathy brings people together.
