Extraordinary: the Over 50 Revolution – Amanda

Amanda said she decided to participate in Extraordinary: the Over 50 Revolution because, like many people, she had not had professional portraits in twenty years. She said, “I feel I have grown and changed as a person since then and what would be captured on camera now would be very different from almost twenty years ago. Also, I want my children to have something after I’m gone to remember me at this stage in my life.”

Amanda feels that women grow more authentic as they age. “Women should not be afraid to show what they have, inside and out. Women over 50 have historically faced ageism and been subjected to unrealistic beauty standards. In addition, they have been dismissed as irrelevant in popular media. It’s important to collectively push back and redefine what it means to age gracefully and with dignity.”

Since she turned 50, Amanda says she is more fearless. “The time is now to follow my heart and attempt to accomplish things in life that I have put off for various reasons. Age is only a number. It shouldn’t determine anything.”

“I always admired women who overcame the odds given their circumstances, whether it was socially, politically, or financially speaking. I grew up watching Princess Diana transform from the shy girl to a world-renowned personality. She used her position of influence to raise awareness about sensitive issues like HIV/AIDS, landmines, and homelessness.”

Amanda’s advice to younger women is to learn to love themselves, including their perceived imperfections. “Don’t wait for anyone else to do it. In the end, you have to live with yourself, and not necessarily with someone else.”

“I hope I can have a positive effect on the people I meet – make their day brighter.”
