Now as the year swings down,
\nand the darkness encloses
\neven the smallest bird,
\nthe largest animal,
\nand we too enter the hour
\nwhen everything is falling once more
\ninto the twilight
\nof not knowing,
\nwhat we ask is that
\nyou be with us,
\nnot as a pillar of fire
\nnor a blaze across
\nthe heavens,
\nbut like water
\nat rest in a pitcher
\nwhich catches the morning light
\nand is filled
\nwith its own radiance.
