Lois Greenfield is one of the best dance and commercial photographers;\u00a0 I have always been in awe of any photographer who can capture a dancer, an athlete, or a child in beautiful light while in motion.\u00a0 Last fall I contacted her to see if she would teach me at her studio in New York City. \u00a0She enrolled me into a two-day workshop in March .<\/p>\n
There were eight of us in the workshop.\u00a0\u00a0 It was not my first experience working with dancers, but it was my first experience working with other photographers in New York. \u00a0I was nervous\u2014I don\u2019t speak \u201cdance,\u201d and the other photographers seemed more versed with dance than me. \u00a0Each day, Lois brought in dancers from several companies.\u00a0 The recruited dancers were busy professionals volunteering their time, and they expected great photos in return. \u00a0Each photographer was responsible to create their own vision with the dancers, and communicate that vision to the dancers as well as the studio\u2019s assistants.\u00a0 This included everything from how to set up the lighting, to what the dancers should wear, to what props to use.\u00a0 We had to think fast.<\/p>\n
The first day, we were all shooting \u201clight and bright.\u201d\u00a0 No one seemed to use shadows, but\u00a0 I wanted more dramatic lighting.\u00a0 When it was my turn on the second day, I directed dancer Lindsey Miller of ACB Dance Company into my vision for a ballet dancer at night.\u00a0 I turned off all of the lighting except for one strobe and a beauty dish.\u00a0\u00a0 Lois asked me, \u201cAre you sure you want it that dark?\u201d\u00a0 I doubted my vision for just a moment.\u00a0 I think Lois might have been testing me.\u00a0 A photographer needs vision, skills and confidence to create a successful image. \u00a0“Yes, I want to try it.\u201d\u00a0 This photo was the result, and it\u2019s my favorite from the entire weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
