Painted Tintypes: Photography for the People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If\u00a0you’re near Boston, go see “Painted Tintypes: Photography for the People” at the Museum of Fine Arts<\/a>. It runs through October 15, 2023. I went to this special exhibit because I’ve always saved my not-so-great tintype portrait plates. During the pandemic I started painting them and making mixed media pieces. In every case I have been able to make something I love from them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

It was interesting to see how the tintypes in this exhibit were done in the 1850s-1860s. In a couple of cases, I noticed a painted watch or piece of jewelry added that probably hadn’t existed. In a couple of cases, I noticed the use of color to tie a couple or a family together more closely.\u00a0

If you appreciate portraiture\u2014especially tintypes\u2014I think you\u2019ll love this exhibit.

If you’re near New Hampshire, you can see some of my mixed media tintypes in a group exhibit called “Alternative Process Photography” at the Galletly Gallery. This exhibit includes tintypes and other alternative photography works from 17 members of the New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists.\u00a0
The artists’ reception is Friday, September 8, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\u00a0
