Last summer, I began learning wet plate collodion (tintype) photography.\u00a0\u00a0These kinds of portraits are handmade, using a process that was invented in 1851.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s very different from my other work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m sort of a perfectionist, so it\u2019s the flaws I\u2019m learning to embrace.  The chemicals can do wonky things sometimes.  There is no Photoshop.  There\u2019s a bit of guesswork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there is a thrill when the portrait begins to appear in the fixer.\u00a0\u00a0Only then I find out whether the dozens of choices I made to create the image were good!\u00a0\u00a0Almost always, there is something I could have done better.\u00a0\u00a0Often, I love it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a one-of-a-kind, physical object, a truly archival portrait, flaws and all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
